Chinese 5 Spice Tofu

Chinese 5 spice is a common spice mix made up of star Anise, fennel, Szechuan peppercorns, cloves, and cinnamon. This spice mixture makes this tofu dish super aromatic and is perfect served over a bed of freshly steamed rice.

Ingredient: Tofu

Ingredients
For the tofu:
  • 1 tablespoon(s) cornstarch
  • salt & pepper (to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon(s) Chinese Five Spice
  • 1 12oz block(s) extra-firm tofu torn into bite sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoon(s) light oil (such as coconut or vegetable)
  • 1 red bell pepper chopped
  • 1 red onion chopped
  • 4 green onions chopped (for garnish)
For the sauce:
  • 5 tablespoon(s) ketchup
  • 5 tablespoon(s) water
  • 2 tablespoon(s) agave
  • 2 tablespoon(s) soy sauce (gluten-free if preferred)
  • 3 teaspoon(s) brown sugar
  • 2 clove(s) garlic minced or pressed
  • 1 teaspoon(s) Chinese Five Spice
  • 1 teaspoon(s) Sriracha
Instructions
  • Place the cornstarch into a medium bowl, season with salt and pepper and Chinese Five Spice. Mix well, then add the tofu pieces and toss to coat evenly.
  • In the meantime, heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu and fry for a few minutes on one side until golden brown, then flip and fry a few minutes more on the other side until golden and crispy all over. Once cooked, take the tofu out of the pan and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and add the bell pepper and red onion. Season with salt and pepper and stir-fry for 5-7 minutes until golden.
  • Meanwhile, make the sauce by combining together all the sauce ingredients in a bowl.
  • Now place the cooked tofu back into the pan and stir in the sauce. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook gently until thickened, 2-3 minutes. Add a splash of water if the sauce is too thick. Serve hot over a bed of rice or other grain and garnish with green onions.
